So I found a new place to live, about a week ago. It's right where I want to be, just one block off Hawthorne and right in the heart of all the commercial goodness. A couple blocks from Powell's, the Bagdad theater, Fred Meyer, coffee shops, bars, various retail shops. Also about five or so blocks from Tao of Tea, Zupans, other bars and coffee shops and stores on Belmont. It's an awesome location.

The two women I'll be living with are great, very friendly, and I get along with them well. The other guy I haven't met yet, but I'm pretty sure he'll be cool.

The room itself isn't perfect. It's a basement room, relatively finished but not your average room in a house, either. It has a small window. It's small itself--about 10x10 on the floor, but closer to 12x12 at waist level (there's a concrete . . . window seat type thing that wraps around two walls). It may end up kind of cramped but I think I can make do. I won't be taking my big computer desk and I'm not sure yet if I'll put my bookcases in there or not. I may end up using the concrete thing as a big, wrap around book shelf. All I need is some wooden shelves and something like cinder blocks to whip up some makeshift, built-into-the-wall bookshelves. I think that could be really cool.

Anyway, I hope it works out well. I think it will. But I guess you never know for sure. One other big plus with the place is that it's damn cheap--$285. That's awesome for the location and will help me not go broke and crazed with financial stress over the next year while I make that shitty AmeriCorps wage.

I'm excited about it. I'm stressed about it. I finally started packing last night and I think it's going to go okay, but I'm still damn stressed. I'm depressed about leaving Cheri and the duplex and Shea, as crazy as she is. I'll write more about that later.

Major life changes are hard.

Hmm. I'm not sure about the extremely sensitive and emotional part. Seems a bit much, but maybe not. Sounds pretty true for the most part.

You are introverted, reserved, and quiet with a preference for solitude and solitary activities. Your socializing tends to be restricted to a few close friends. You can be very easily upset, even by what most people consider the normal demands of living. People consider you to be extremely sensitive and emotional. Novelty, variety, and change spice up your life and make you a curious, imaginative, and creative person. You have a strong interest in others' needs and well-being. You are pleasant, sympathetic, and cooperative. You are reasonably reliable, organized, and self-controlled.

You fit in with:
Humanism

Your ideals mostly resemble that of a Humanist. Although you do not have a lot of faith, you are devoted to making this world better, in the short time that you have to live. Humanists do not generally believe in an afterlife, and therefore, are committed to making the world a better place for themselves and future generations.

This has to be some of the best lyrics ever. It's from a song about zombies called "Re Your Brains" by Jonathan Coulton:

All we want to do is eat your brains
We're not unreasonable
I mean, no one's gonna eat your eyes

Also, it's probably funnier when you hear it in the song. Especially if you're not expecting it. So you can thank me for ruining it for you.

Jesus God, there are a lot of upcoming concerts I want to go to.

September sees Two Gallants at the Doug Fir. They're like crazy western punk rock that I find to be very cool, and I really want to see "Las Cruces Jail" performed live. Later in September is Flogging Molly at the Roseland. I'm not excited about them being at the Roseland, since the sound kind of sucks, but I still think it'll be cool and I've been greatly wanting to see them live, so I'm much excited.

And then there's October, which sees Dropkick Murphys at the Crystal Ballroom (WOO!) and then Sufjan Stevens (which I may or may not go to) also at the Crystal, and The Decemberists at the Crystal, then Jackie Greene at the Aladdin Theater and finally Cursive at the Roseland. I'm fucking excited about all of it, though only some of those I'm definitely going to.

And then there'll probably end up being more concerts I'm interested in come November and December.

Then there's also a fuckton of albums coming out that I want, like Jet and The Decemberists and The Killers and My Chemical Romance and probably a bunch of others I'm not yet aware I want.

I mean, fucking aye. So much music.

It's awesome.

Last night was fun. I went out for my birthday with some friends, hitting a couple bars. I had plenty to drink. The shot of Jameson at The Moon and Sixpence was probably one too much, but that's fine. I at least don't feel like I embarassed myself too much, so it was a successful night.

Things were looking less than fantastic for awhile, but then Eric showed up just before Cheri and Nathan and I were about to give up on the night and just go hit Powells and go home. Surprisingly, he not only hung out with us at Rogue, but joined us over at Moon and Sixpence as well, which was very cool.

All in all, a fun birthday. Not quite as crazy as I had been expecting, but I can't complain. I enjoyed it.

Cheri just gave me five sure-to-be-fantastic books for my birthday. They are:

Collapse - Jared Diamond
After the Quake - Haruki Murakami
Underground - Haruki Murakami
The Girl in the Flammable Skirt - Aimee Bender
The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene

Now I have to fit these into my reading schedule for this year, which should be relatively easy. I'm think all but one of the Murakamis will probably get in, though Collapse or Elegant Universe might end up being put off until 2007.

I am very pleased. :)
